I decided to organize a weekly creative writing exercise in the office to sharpen the skills of the writing pool. Everyone takes a turn inventing an exercise or a prompt.

The only general rule we've been using is that it should be doable in an hour or so. We've also tried to keep things fun.

Please feel free to share your own exercise efforts by leaving a comment. You can do that at the end of each exercise by clicking on 'Share your own effort'. Enjoy!

Exercise 4 - Imaginative writing

This exercise involved writing a short legend based on one of three pictures provided.  I chose the first one shown below.

The proud solitary boulder

Thousands of years ago, when the earth was younger, a new island emerged from the middle of the ocean.  From its center pushing outward there grew a mountain, bare but pregnant.  From its belly was born a solitary boulder.  The boulder strong and mighty looked around near and far and found not a rock or creature larger than itself.  At this the boulder decided it was invincible and all too powerful.

"I am the master of this island.  My rule is without question and my strength without equal." the solitary boulder boomed.

The clouds took little notice of the proud boulder and went about their daily business knowing all too well that the young but proud boulder knew not its proper place yet.

Again the boulder exclaimed:  "I am the master of this island.  My rule is without question and my strength without equal."  The boulder's tirade went on without pause for days on end until the clouds decided enough was enough.

"Young boulder, how dare you claim rule on this island.  You are strong and hard but you are not as invincible as you think."

The solitary boulder laughed at the clouds' and instead of pausing for thought, continued its proud booming declarations of rule and might.  "I am the master of this island.  My rule is without question and my strength without equal."

At this the clouds decided to teach the proud boulder a lesson.  Picking up a small seed from a faraway continent, the clouds blew the small kernel over the rough seas and planted it on top of the solitary boulder.  The boulder, annoyed by the sudden tiny nuisance shook the particle off its top.  The seed rolled and dropped to the ground where the boulder took one look at the puny seed and laughed with all its might.

The clouds admonished the boulder.  "Do not underestimate the power of a small seed.  It may look puny and harmless to you but over time, it can overpower you and break you in half."

The boulder promptly laughed off the reprimand and rolled over the tiny seed and pushed it deep into the rich and fertile soil of the new island.  The seed soon sprouted and pushed into the boulder.  The boulder, strong and mighty, hardly noticed the seedling's quiet attack.  But days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years.  The seed slowly but surely grew stronger and gradually found tiny cracks within the boulder until finally, it sprouted right through to the top.  Growing faster this time and helped along by the clouds with constant rain and regular parting to let through the sun's nurturing rays, the tree grew into a sapling, into a bush, and finally into a large tree.

The marching years saw the tree grow stronger and stronger and the boulder grow weaker and weaker.  Until at last the boulder gave up, split open, and finally quit fighting the once puny seedling.  The solitary boulder, tired, old and humbled, had finally learned its lesson. To this day, the split boulder with the tree in the middle stands as a reminder from the clouds against misplaced pride.
